17 apps for writers

There are apps for just about everything these days, and writing is no exception. Here is a list of some of the more popular apps. Please note that I haven’t tried many of these and the descriptions have been pulled from information available at the app website. If you have experience—good or bad—with any of these, I would love to hear from you. And if you recommend other apps not listed here, please let me know!

Byword Byword provides an environment to write on your iPhone and iPad, seamlessly syncing your documents between your Mac devices using iCloud or Dropbox. $2.99 for iPhone and iPad.

Evernote With this app, all of your notes, web clips, files, and images are made available on all devices and computers. Free for Mac and PC; $5 per month for premium version.

iThoughtsHD This mind-mapping app is designed specially for the iPad. $9.99 for iPad.

OutlinePro An outliner that lets you break your outline into sections and paragraphs. When youre finished, you can turn bullet points into paragraphs and export to a writing app. $9.99 for iPad.

Pages Create, edit, and view documents wherever you are. Pages works with iCloud, so your documents stay up to date on all your devices — automatically. $9.99 for iPad.

PlainText Text editor with an uncomplicated, paper-like user interface. Unlike the default Notes app, PlainText allows you to create and organize your documents in folders and sync everything with Dropbox.com. Free for iPhone and iPad.

Scrivener This content-generation tool helps in composing and structuring long, difficult documents. $40 for Mac and PC.

Story Tracker Keep track of submitted stories, novels, poems, and articles easily. Lite version free for Mac and PC. $7.99 for full version.

Verse Perfect Poetry app that gives you phrases, proper nouns, and common rhymes. Free for PC.

Wikipanion Wikipedia browsingapplication. Free for iPhone and iPad; $4.99 for full version.

WriteChain is tool for writers to set a daily goal and stay accountable to it. Free for iPhone.

Write or Die Writing productivity application that forces you to write by providing consequences for distraction and procrastination. $9.99 for Mac and PC.

Writer Writing app that’s good for taking notes or even writing on your phone or tablet. Free for Android.

Writer’s Studio Bring together multiple elements into one interactive story. $4.99 for iPhone and iPad.

yWriter Sometimes referred to as a more Spartan version of Srivener, YWriter is a distraction-free organizing tool for writers. Free for PC.
